THE MYSTERIES OF DEMENTIA TREATMENT
There is so much to learn about the mysteries of Dementia and how it can be treated. On Monday night we learned from Professor Kate Hoy from the Bionics Institute about the clinical trials to deal with this. Basically, one needs to contrast normal changes from serious changes. Dementia is the very definition of serious changes that occur as we age.
Alzheimers is a growing epidemic in our community, representing two thirds of Dementia cases. The elements which are integral to Dementia include age, generic risk factors, vascular, low physical activity, social isolation, hearing loss, head trauma and sleep disturbance. With the inclusion of healthy dietary habits, a lower intake of fats, moderate exercise and mental and social activities, the risk of developing Dementia significantly decreases.
When dysfunctional connectivity persists, the transmission of information is disrupted. There are two types of treatment currently:
1. neuro transmitter based treatment which is temporary
2. monoloclonal antibodies which is only available in the USA, to reduce amyloid in the brain. It is still not one hundred percent and has its side effects.
Magnetic stimulation which is part of Kate's research delivers pulses to the scalp. The benefit of this treatment is that the patient is awake throughout the process. It creates more lasting changes in brain activity.
We also heard from Sam McLarty about the Bionic Institute. It is a corporate member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne, and part of the Health and Aging Committee in that Rotary Club. Members were asked to sign-up to receive more information about the Institute and we were encouraged to consider donating towards this major source of research.
In conclusion, with the clinical trials now taking place, a number of areas of health are under the umbrella of magnetic stimulation - PTSD, anxiety, stroke rehabilitation, depression (an adjunct treatment). It is very exciting to see the prospects that Profession Kate and Sam outlined for us. The future is looking good.
