1.     Thanks to Rob and Karen Simpson and Lili-Ann for a wonderful evening last week. Well-paced, great variety and well-pitched age appropriate questions. Congratulations to the winning table: Cathie, Bob, Joe, Ted, Rosemary, & myself snatching a win by 2 points from the Japan skiiers group.
2.     Volunteers for Op-Shop: Tuesdays and Thursdays pm – RC Canterbury receives approx. $2k pa for my single shift.

Last Weeks Meeting - WHAT MAKES BOROONDARA GREAT
LOVE LOCAL LIFE: WHAT MAKES BOROONDARA GREAT - Anne

Our two presenters tonight, spoke about the City of Boroondara. Nick Lund, who coordinates liveable communities at the City of Boroondara, profiled the essential features :- an economy of  $12.39 billion, emphasis on health care and social assistance, and with a significant population aged over 55. With 53 shopping precincts and 11 trade associations, there is much to deal with. Furthermore, there are 28 secondary schools in this location. The City of Boroondara has a strategy in the " Boroondara Community Plan 2021-2031". Five strategies have been established in consultation with all age groups.

Lucinda Bakhach is a trained economist who now works for the City of Boroondara. The City of Boroondara facilitates special trader associations, running business events and delivering relevant workshops. She informed us about the Camberwell Fresh Food Market, which is owned by the City of Boroondara. In her words, the Council wants to add value in the space and help with assessments for the associations. She described the process of place making, noting that many businesses are moving from Union Road to Maling Road.

Some interesting topics were raised after the presentations, about the progress of the strategies adopted and the effectiveness of the programme.
Both Lucinda and Nick emphasised the importance of Rotary in the life of the City of Boroondara and promised to follow up on some of the queries raised.

CONCLUSION

There is a real sizzle in the passions behind what makes the City of Boroondara great. It is clear that those of us who live in the zone want to make a great suburb even greater.
Next Weeks Speaker - Tim Smith - Family Business Australia and New Zealand
The family business sector is one of the most important contributors to the Nation and our way of life. Making up 70% of all businesses and employing 50% of the Nation’s work force, family businesses have been the backbone of the Australian economy for generations. Whether it is a start-up, or a multi-generational family business they support local economies, employment, and communities.
Yet few people spare a thought for the unique issues faced by family business owners and their families. And, whilst the issues may be unique to family businesses, they are not unique among family businesses, with many facing similar challenges, often alone, thinking they are the only ones. Out of this knowledge Family Business Australia (FBA) was formed by the family business community for the family business community. A not for profit member based association, 2023 marks the 25th year FBA supporting family businesses and the family business sector.

About Tim

Tim Smith is the National Membership Manager at Family Business Australia. He, along with a dedicated and engaging team based across the Nation work to remove the isolation many family businesses experience whilst also providing them with support and resources to enhance their success as a family in business. FBA provides the perfect opportunity to connect, share and grow with family business peers.
