Last Saturday, Rotarians for Bees participated in the Boroondara Sustainability Festival which was a key community event at Paterson Park adjoining the Farmers Market.
It was a hot but very successful event, well attended by community families and very well managed by City of Boroondara with numerous environment related stalls and features. Our stall also welcomed the support of Murray Wilkinson and his Nature Strip Garden program, so successfully managed by our Rotary friends at Balwyn.
We featured education and planting information material aimed at informing young children about the importance of bees and pollination. In particular, many children dressed as bees or butterflies and did our jigsaws or pollinated the apple tree and then received a slice of apple as a reward and to learn about the importance and outcome of pollination. We received regular visits from the very colourfull stilted Bee and Preying Mantus which helped reinforce our message.
The photos below show some of the highlights. We are so grateful to our Canterbury members who helped so much for the duration of a particularly hot day. Judy Parslow and Liz McCaskill greeted and engaged with families and children for around six hours and did a remarkable job. So did President Elizabeth and the incredible Rob Simpson who also built the apple tree board which was decorated and demonstrated so beautifully by Liz and Judy. Thanks also to Jill W and others who dropped by to provide support and energy . I am sure it increased the awareness of Rotary and our Canterbury club as well as further enhancing our environment partnership with City of Boroondara.
