Stories
Last weeks meeting
Thought for the night presented by David Shave
"We often take for granted that which deserves our gratitude"

Well the meeting started off with the latest initiative from Pres Edda who set up the raffle ticket desk and managed to get a few souls who were keen to win the six pack of craft beers. That lucky person turned out to be Hans who, by the way, doesn't drink beer!.  Keep eyes peeled for next week when we will have another great raffle prize to be won.

So on to the important stuff especially from the Pres!
  • The Pres attended the Boroondara citizenship ceremony and was able to meet a lot of new Australians
  • there is a roster for chair of the night who will bring their version of the raffle prize
  • Edda and Cathie attended the Wooden Rock garden opening and were very impressed by the event which was well attended - here are some snaps

Matters in the interest of Rotary

  • Probably a little late but there was a FORaMEAL packing event held today at Caulfield Grammar - looking forward to the feedback from Val next week
  • There is a District packing event planned for November 5th at DIK
  • Busy Feet started again yesterday 5th October - volunteers still needed please see Jenni
  • A reminder from Tony about the end Polio walk and registering to join the Canterbury Canters
  • John Macaskill reminded us about our guest speaker next week Pam Ahern of Edgars Mission - details below - tell your friends

Last Weeks Speaker
PARTNERING TO SAVE AUSTRALIA'S ENDANGERED WILDLIFE- Anne J

Bianca Friend, our speaker tonight, works for Australia Wildlife Conservancy (AWC). The AWC manages over seven million hectares of land, which is serviced by 208 people.. She has been involved with the AWC for four years. The AWC was established by Martin Copley. It deals with endangered species and more particularly, ensuring that the biodiversity of species is maintained in Australia.

Bianca gave us examples of what she called "conservation estates" throughout parts of Australia, areas in which the AWC deals with the habitat for animals on the cusp of extinction.

Seventy percent of the staff work in the field. Different strategies are applied to deal with endangered animals. In some cases, fences are constructed to protect a particular species of animal. More importantly, science underpins everything the AWC does.

Surveying which animal species inhabit a zone is essential. In some cases, farmers working pastoral land request the AWC to survey an area to assess and evaluate which animals are on a particular site. In other cases, governments allocate zones to enable the AWC to experiment with wildlife preservation. The goal of the AWC is to manage more of Australia, focusing on species which are at risk of extinction. Should individuals wish to volunteer, Bianca directed them to the AWC website, using the volunteer portal.

Bianca demonstrated a passion for the preservation of animals in Australia. She, through her presentation, informed us about the scientific and overall strategies adopted to preserve biodiversity.
Next Weeks Speaker - Pam Ahern

Pam Ahern is Founder and Director of the not-for-profit haven for rescued farmed animals Edgar’s Mission. The one-time equestrian champion gave it all up when, in 2003, a tiny piglet, the eminent Edgar Alan Pig, trotted into her life and led her down a path she’d never imagined. With Edgar firmly at its heart, Pam built the sanctuary from the ground up and set in motion outreach programs that would bring farmed animals out of the dark unknown and into public view.

Today the Edgar’s Mission family includes more than 400 rescued farmed animals, each and every one living their best life on the sanctuary’s 153 peaceable acres in Lancefield, Victoria.

Pam is also the proud Australian Ambassador for World Animal Day and was a 2014 Victorian Local Hero Finalist in the Australia of the Year Awards.

Edgar’s Mission’s thought-provoking motto says it all; “If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others, why wouldn’t?”
Zone 8 Regionalisation result

Dear Rotary members,

Thank you to all clubs who cast their vote in the Zone 8 Regionalisation pilot ballot.

We were delighted with the result with more than 89% of clubs across the zone expressing a YES vote.  This lets us know that there is strong support for a pilot which will enable us to trial, explore, design and evaluate a new regional approach to supporting and governing Rotary and Rotaract clubs in Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island region.

We are pleased to advise that 20 out of 21 Districts achieved the required threshold of two thirds majority of clubs voting Yes. The club vote was also endorsed by all 21 District Governors in their role as Rotary International Officers.

Whilst one district had more than 50% of clubs vote yes, it did not meet the two thirds threshold.

At this point in time, we will advise the Rotary International Board of the outcome as well as seek guidance on the path forward.  Thank you for your patience and we will be in touch once we have a clear course of action.

If you require further information, please contact your District Governor.

We would like to thank all Rotary and Rotaract volunteers who have supported this project. We would also like to thank the Rotary International staff at our Sydney office and elsewhere for their ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Ingrid Waugh

Paul Harris Breakfast
RIMERN wine order
RIMERN Homemaker Wine orders

After its successful Van Rouge campaign, RIMERN is embarking on a new campaign - marketing quality wines towards funding a new delivery van to streamline operations.

The new campaign will reward RIMERN clients by providing photos of the donated goods in situ, in their new homes, and on RIMERN social media. This activity promotes RIMERN's services and demonstrates to clients, volunteers and donors (stakeholders), the quality of the goods available: a positive and inspiring image.

It’s Spring: time for a new life and a new beginning.
The new RIMERN wine promotion is called “Homemaker Voucher Vino”. Again, it will offer quality wines at a special cost. Funds raised will contribute to the Rewards scheme for the RIMERN clients who participate in the social media campaign. Funds will also contribute to the much-needed delivery van.

Rewards will consist of a $50 Coles Group & Myer Gift Card which can be redeemed by our clients in Myer, Target, Kmart, Coles, Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, First Choice Liquor Superstore or Officeworks. It allows the clients to add personalised touches to their new homes such as small items or goodies to entertain...

The wine selection is a new and exciting range produced by the well-known Yarra Valley winemaker Peter Fergusson with exciting premium options.
These are: -
·      South Australian 2021 Sauvignon Blanc
·      Clare Valley 2020 Riesling
·      Victorian 2021 Reserve Sangiovese Rosé
·      Yarra Valley 2018 Chardonnay
·      Yarra Valley 2019 Pinot Noir
·      Heathcote 2020 Shiraz

How do I order?
You can order a minimum of 6 bottles, but we raise $40 per dozen sold! Remember: for every purchase of a dozen wines from the above selection, $40.00 goes towards the purchase of the vouchers.
Peruse the offerings above and make your selection – there is a great selection to suit your palate.
