Last Monday the Club met at Cothan Dining as the Canterbury Centre is being repaired following a plumbing disaster.
Newly installed President Tony Nguyen led us in an informal night of short presentations by Director and members.
Thanks to the scribing of Anne Josefsberg, the following are notes of the matters discussed at the meeting:
Club Service - Rob proposed a social event at least once a month with partners/friends. He encouraged us to bring a friend to a normal meeting to add new members.
A FORaMEAL event is planned for Friday 14 July at Camberwell Grammar School.
Bass Care - John suggested that by 7 August, when the DG visits the Club, that the Canterbury Centre may hopefully be available.
Ant - Report from a Camberwell Market discussion that the Mayor of Boroondara, Cr Felicity Sinfield, would love to come to the Rotary Club of Canterbury either as a speaker or to attend.
A Medical Mission to the Philippines is planned from 14/10/23 to 24/10/23. Doug informed us that there is a good mix of attendees. Cost will be between $1,800 and $2,000. With 20 applications, 6-8 will be prioritised. Some Orthoptic staff from LaTrobe University have agreed to attend, along with an audiologist from the Rotary Club of North Balwyn. It is the first mission to take place in three years, following the COVID lockdown.
Financial Report - John gave good financial news for the Rotary Club of Canterbury. $36,000 has been provided from member's attendance at the Camberwell Market. Wear the Wattle badges accrued $10,000 and approximately $30,000 from the FORaMEAL events. One third of the members have paid their membership. A reasonable profit has been achieved for the year.
The Environment - A project is planned to be undertaken with the Rotary Club of Woodend.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - Accessibility is important.
Community Service Portfolio - The activities need to involve as many members as possible, connect with the community and this may involve undertaking fewer but more significant projects.
Strategy Taskforce - The Rotary Club of Canterbury is reviewing its project strategy which may result in some changes in direction, with the aim to sustain strategies and apply sound practices. Projects will be reviewed on a regular basis.
Our speaker next week is Anna Andrusyh and the theme of her presentation will be Ukraine - a civilian update from the frontline
Anna is a proud Ukrainian and a history teacher and tour guide. When the war started, she, her husband, 6 year old and 4 month old together with Anna’s mother were living in the vegetable cellar as bombs fell outside. This was when the Russian tanks attempted and failed to take over the capital Kyiv.
Anna’s weapon became her voice. Determined to keep the spotlight on the terrible invasion, Anna did many media interviews all around the world.
Four months ago Anna’s husband was called to the military office and sent to Poland for training.
Anna is being hosted by several Australian’s that have toured with her as their guide.
Anna is here for two months with her young boys to have a break from the war, whilst encouraging Australians’ to not forget the sacrifice Ukrainians are making and give continued support from Australia.
Please come along and invite partners and friend to what will be a very interesting night.
The Monday 17 July meeting will again be at Cotham Dining. Cotham Dining has a private upstairs room, and easy parking in the street or the Woolworths carpark opposite.
Cotham Dining's address is 26 Cotham Road Kew.
We get one course for our $35 cost, and a choice of three wines at reasonable prices. Unfortunately all those attending must be eating, there is no BYO food and definitely no BYO wine. Start time is 6 for 6.30 pm
Thanks to David Zrna for organising the bi-weekly lunches. David has provided the dates for 2023. If you are free on the day get along and join past and current members
Buckle Up wine lovers, the Van Range is BACK for Winter!
RIMERN’S fundraising wine range, Van Rouge (for the red lovers), Van Blanc (for those who enjoy a crisp white) and the new kids in the range, Van Rose & the sparkling Van Prosecco & Sparkling Shiraz are ready to hit the road to raise funds to keep the RIMERN furniture van’s wheels turning as it roams inner Melbourne’s streets collecting donated furniture, appliances and homewares for the growing number of clients setting up their secure homes after doing it tough in so many ways.
A new range, same great prices, just $17 - $22 a bottle, all selected to help you sip, share & support RIMERN in style!
RIMERN is the premier ‘hands on’ Community Service project of 16 inner Melbourne Rotary Clubs, that supports people who have been experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, refugee displacement, time in jail or loss from fire or flood.
Your purchase of the Van wine range (mixed or solely your favourite variety) will fuel the van and support its new signage, a mobile billboard that will tell RIMERN’s story all over town! Every dozen sold raises $40, so if every member Club sells 20 dozen each there’s $12,800 raised & lots of partying to be enjoyed!
