  • A reminder about the Camberwell Art show highlighted in last weeks bulletin - June 25th to July 3rd
  • Graham Bishop, after many years of sterling service has advised that he wishes to hand over the reins for the Wear the Wattle project and also his liaison with Bass Care for the weekly meetings. Anyone interested in taking on that project which is an important one for the club?
  • On this note Edda advised that she is planning a soft relaunch of Wear the Wattle and has asked that this be shared via whatever social media platforms you have available
  • John has already emailed everyone re their membership renewal as we finalise numbers ahead of the new Presidential year.
  • Doug provided an update on the Education programme for the Phillipines. This project has been cleared by RAWCS and is now full speed ahead. Another great and sizeable project for RC Canterbury
How about the FORaMEAL project then?  The word is continuing to spread. After last weeks presentation to RC Footscray Doug did the same today when he attended a meeting of RC Malvern. Here's a photo

Last Weeks Speaker - Adeline Khong Empower Asutralia
A fascinating presentation to the club on a project closely allied to one of our own and also strongly aligned to the values of Rotary

TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY

Adeline Khong came to Australia from Singapore thirteen years ago. She is proud of being a certified foster carer, and has fostered ten children over a period of three years. What she represents in Empower Australia is the belief that people should be able to reach their full potential.

FOOD INSECURITY IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Much of the work undertaken in Empower Australia deals with individuals facing food insecurity. Five thousand meals have been provided in five locations. Foodbank donates food to this organization. The statistic which needs to be emphasized is one which informs us that three in five Australians faced food insecurity during the COVID19 lockdown. Empower Australia provides a supermarket style service, in order to preserve the dignity of the individual. The goal is to leverage people out of poverty.

THE FLEMINGTON ESTATE

The story of the way Empower Australia dealt with food insecurity is demonstrated by the delivery of food when it was suddenly placed in quarantine. Th Schools Breakfast Programs, giving hot breakfasts and lunches to students highlights the effectiveness of Empower Australia.

PARTNERING WITH OTHER GROUPS

Empower Australia partners with the St Kilda Football Club to handle bullying issues in schools. Potential confrontations in the community are prevented due to being reported to Victoria Police. As a result of reporting the fight between two groups of young people, the conflict never took place.

MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

An anecdote referred to, by Adeline , described the journey of young men, who suffered from depression, from just selecting food at the supermarket, to leaving the halfway house and obtaining a job. People need to be valued and feeling safe.

CONCLUSION

The amount of good will at the meeting of The Rotary Club of Canterbury was palpable. Adeline's organization struck a chord with those present at the Rotary meeting.. the Rotary Club of Canterbury is particularly proud of the projects in which it is involved. There was a definite view that perhaps The Rotary Club of Canterbury should partner with Empower Australia.

Empower Australia has worked within public housing communities for over 10 years, through our Street Team Program. Since 2020, the program has worked specifically in the area of food relief—to provide support to residents. We are planning to run our Street Team Program which would include a free BBQ and social-activation and community-building activities as restrictions have eased.

Through our School Welfare Division The No Bull Movement, Empower Australia has been running Breakfast Programs in schools for over 10 years. Statistics show that 1 in 5 Australian students are unable to afford breakfast at least once a week. Providing healthy and nutritious breakfasts to high school students through our Breakfast Program helps students focus in class, maximises their opportunities to learn and improves their general health outcomes.

There were a number of questions raised by the members
Q. Who started Empower
A Empower is a project originally started by Planet Shakers Global

Q. Are there volunteers
A. the organisation in Melbourne has 3 staff members and can draw on 250 volunteers

Q. With the opening up of the economy from COVID has demand for support decreased
A. Yes bit it is still high

Q. Do you screen those who are looking for your support
A. No - what we do is based on the honesty system

Adeline commented that, during COVID, they had significant support from Foodbank at no cost, now there is a nominal fee for the food provided

Next week

BUSYFEET BOROONDARA

Volunteers needed urgently for term 2.

Classes are held on Wednesdays during the school term between the hours of 4.30 and 5.30pm and they are held at the Hawthorn Town Hall.
No special talents needed. You will need a  WWC card, but we can help you with that.
Come and try it out.

We have had to cancel the program earlier than normal this term because I am away on holidays and we are missing some usual volunteers.

Contact me, Jenni on 0407334207. Leave a message and I'll call you back.

BusyFeet is a dance and movement class for children with special needs. These beautiful children get so much pleasure and also improvement with their motor skills.
It’s a fabulous program and needs to continue, but can’t without more volunteers. Please consider helping.

BUSYFEET BOROONDARA is a combined program between the Rotary Clubs of Canterbury and Camberwell.
Update on the East Gippsland Timber Milling Project

By. Bernie Farquarson

May 2022
Dear partners and stake holders
Thank you for your contribution to this amazing and effective project , the project is in full swing,
two mills are operating 5 days a week 5 full time employed people who were previously un
employed, all now accredited in Forestry Management and chainsaw and lucas mill operation
recognised Nata certificates through our Local Tafe.

Milestones

  • Formation of East Gippsland Milling project lncorporated.
  • Working Partnership with BRV, DELWP, NRRA, Rotary, Lions, Minderoo
  • 105 properties registered.
  • 33 completed
  • 780 logs milled estimated retailValue {$1.5mill}
  • S40k of timber surplus to property owners needs, donated to those property owners who do not have trees down.
  • Average time on spent on property 3 weeks
  • Average timeline for cutting logs with 50% moisture content 4-5years dependant on weather and log location.
Greatest strengths, Economic impact,
1. We only cut, fallen trees, generally a waste product left by the devastation of 2019-20 fires.
1000s of trees were felled during this disaster. Not just from wind and fire but back burning
operations created enormous resource that would otherwise be chipped or burnt.

2. Dollar Value of Timber packs. average price StSk average packs cut per farm 10. The average
cost of timber required to replace a small cattle yard is S35k.

3. Our contractors , 5 passionate previously unemployed people now running 3 contracting
companies. Great training and mentoring programs supplied by tafe rotary and lions.

4. Grant money directly injected into East Gippsland economy, no overheads, board is totally
volunteered.

5. Replanting, every tree we cut we offer 10 trees to landholders to plant, these trees are from
seeds collected from local areas and propagated by volunteers and returned as saplings.

6. Socials and mental health, while we do not train for this, our team manager lost her own
home in the fires, as the window and first contact to our business her empathy towards the
loss is making our project extremely successful in getting the property owner out of the dark
spot and re focused, Getting the farmer involved in our operation is a key to keeping them
out of the health system and getting back on track. We have letters from Partners stating we
have saved their partners lives and the farm.

7. We bring community together, farmers dragging logs from each others farms to milling
sites, the building of a Lectern for the local hall, from timber contributed from each farm we
have cut from. Community launches are held to bring farmers togethers a chance to talk,
discuss and plan.

8. Facebook page East Gippsland Milling Project.

We now need further funding, our property owner list is growing and a recent visit to the Genoa
Mallacoota area has revealed an additional 12 properties, their community has been preparing for
our visit, Famers and lions club members have been working together retrieving logs and stacking
them onto suitable sites ready for our teams to arrive.

Trees on the ground have a time line for cutting, as they dry out the milling becomes increasing
harder on our machinery, a wet summer has been beneficial to our course.

We have purchased another mill and have trained and accredited another team in preparation we
need operation funding for this mill.
We also need another two mills to complete our goal of 105 properties in that 5 year window. The
need is established , the formulae has been tested and works, the dollars are now needed to provide
our farmers and property owners with a real tangible relief from 2 years of extraordinary
circumstances and 3 years of drought prior to the fires and pandemic.
