On Monday night we had a very informative presentation by Dr Moh Dadfarin on hearing loss and its significant impact on an individual health.
It's been a busy week for some of us in the club. Last Monday we packed 200 birthing kits it was an interesting exercise - one with profound benefits for women in Third World countries but also provided fellowship for members of the club.
Later in the week we travelled to Tay Cregan Hall for food packing with Strathcona students. They were an extremely enthusiastic bunch and helped pack 28,000 meals a wonderful effort.
We have quite a busy time coming up in the club. We haven't had many social activity so far this year, but the next few months will make up for it.
1) Changeover on 29 June
2) Camberwell art show on 6 July followed by a meal, probably at the Auburn or Tower hotel
3) On the 20 July there will be a trivia night at Auburn Bowls Centre.
4) Rob Simpson is organising a dance night to be held in conjunction with Camberwell Rotary club on 3 August.
5)Plans are being made for a full night at the Lido cinema in Hawthorn to be held on 17 August. This will be in conjunction with a Kew Rotary club.
More information for all of these events will be forthcoming.
We will also be having a food cooking session at it's the little things in Denham Road Hawthorn on 19 August. The packed food is then sent to various charities. We need eight people to participate and I would be grateful if you could let me know whether you are interested. We provide the Cordon Bleu skills and they provide everything else. I believe lunch will be provided.
In between these activities, they will of course be several more food packing exercises and our weekly meetings.
This will be an exciting few months. Something to really look forward to.
Last Monday evening Dr Moh Dadfarin, founder and Director of Ear and hearing Australia spoke to us about hearing loss and how it impacts on many aspects of our lives.
Dr Moh advised that hearing is more than ears - it is about the brain. Untreated it can contribute to dementia.
Hearing loss happens to most people as we age. Its start slowly where we miss high pitch sounds. Then it can be harder to hear in group settings and speech can sound muffled.
Over 70% of people over 70 years old have hearing loss. But many don't realise it is happening. as the loss happens slowly and the signs are often dismissed.
Hearing provides the foundation for communication and social functioning. When hearing becomes disrupted then hearing becomes tiring, raises anxiety, work becomes challenging and quality of life decreases with less independence.
Untreated hearing loss increase the risk of dementia by 200 - 500 %. Also hearing loss can cause reduction in the size of the brain assocaied with speech, hearing and memory.
Dr Moh mentioned possible solutions.
Hearing rehabilitation which includes hearing aids, improved sensory input, reduced cognitive load, social engagement and increased physical activity.
Finally Dr Moh mentioned thet appropaite hearing aids can reduce the rate of cognitive decline by 48 %.
Many thanks Dr Moh for a very informative presentation.

The setup team of Narelle, Ant, Alan, David, President Jill, Pat, Helen, Kylie, Doug and me attended Tay Creggan campus of Strathcona Girls Grammar School for setup on Thursday 18 June. We were pretty slick and in a little over an hour we were looking great, all ready for the next day and headed off home again.
We returned again on Friday 19 June and the girls packed 26,880 meals for the 2 sessions on the day.
The team was added to by Yidan from RC Melbourne. Marg from RC Port Phillip and Kylie McQualter (a valued supporter who was originally introduced to the project when she came as our guest speaker). We excused David due to other commitments and Kyle a usual participant was benched and was supposed to be sitting with his feet up. Not fully compliant according to Terry!
Our thanks are extended to all who contributed to make the day easier. Thanks, are also extended for the lovely lunch provided for us and to the new campus head Marlo Vander Zalm and other staff that participated for the day.
On Tuesday this week, 23 June 2026 we returned to Caulfield Grammar Campus at Caulfield. The students packed 11,500 meals. This means that for the 2025-2026 Rotary Year 335,000 meals have been packed.
Thanks again to the wonderful support team of Narelle, Ant, Alan, President Jill, Rob, Doug and the supporters: Kate Cross, Paul Rogers, Tahlia and Liam from the Melbourne Uni Rotaractors and Marg from RC Port Phillip. Enjoy the break everyone.
