Last weeks meeting 25 October 2021
Interesting meeting last week. The Pres's screenshot efforts need some work - come on Pres!

John Macaskill was our host this week with the guest speaker Aris Petratos aligned to John's (and our clubs) passion for the Bees.

John started with an apt quote

The next few decades represent a final opportunity to build a stable home for ourselves and restore the rich, healthy and wonderful world that we inherited from our distant ancestors. Our future on the planet, the only place as far as we know where life of any kind exists, is at stake.”

... David Attenborough and A Life on Our Planet ...

We were also given an insight by John into Emma's Garden - the urbanisation of inner Melbourne - a presentation he made to the Morning Tea with the DG. What a great job she is doing in creating colour in the inner suburbs - using nature strips and the like.

EMMA CUTTING AND THE HEART GARDEN
Emma Cutting began a project in the heart of South Melbourne to improve the quality of life of the residents. Nature strip gardens are located in high rise zones, which create a habitat for bees.
So successful has this project been, that within an area of eight kilometres, it has involved many Rotary Clubs. If you want to learn more about "The Heart Garden", the website is : theheartgardenproject.com.

Cathie reminded everyone about our collaboration with RIMERN and WERN who are powering ahead and signing up new agencies providing much needed support to those who need help settling in.  We do have a commitment as a founder member, to provide assistance. Many thanks to those of you have already been actively engaged in the working bees etc.

Bob mentioned the R100 project and confirmed the opening date is locked in for Sunday, November 21st starting at 12 noon.  We are still not sure about numbers but that information will be coming soon!  Also there is a need for a letterbox drop in the weekend/week before so let Bob know if you can help.

Last weeks Speaker - Aris Petratos
ARIS PETRATOS AND THE THREE BEES

Aris, our speaker, is a member of Rotarians for Bees. He is also a commercial bee- keeper. You can buy his honey in supermarkets and in smaller farmer markets. Look out for 3 Bees Honey with the funky labels

HOW ARIS FOUND BEES
Aris's love of bees started in an unusual way. With a Greek heritage he, understandably, spent a lot of time in a Greek Orthodox Church where wax candles are used. Unsurprisingly these candles are made from beeswax.

Humans, historically, have had an enduring and productive relationship with bees. They pollinate, and consequently feed human beings. Since his early childhood, Aris has been fascinated by and passionate about them. When he visited the Collingwood Childrens' Farm, a bee- keeper there took his contact details , and sent him a swarm to enable him to establish a hive. This was only the beginning of what would become not only his hobby, but his job.

WHAT TO DO WITH EXCESS HONEY?

Once he began to produce excess honey, he realised that he could sell his product (hence the The 3 Bees). Unlike many of the supermarket brands which can be diluted with additives product, Aris' product is in a glass jar and labeled in accordance with the plant from which it was pollinated.

MARKET STALLS AND HONEY
Due to the variety of Australian native flora and fauna, the type of honey produced is of an extraordinarily high quality, in fact, the best in the world. He may have been a finance broker and involved in shopping tours in his previous working life, but he has developed a deep knowledge of plant life and how this leads to the magical variety of honey.

Thanks for a fascinating talk Aris

End Polio campaign - October - an update 4th November
Well the Month of October has come and gone and therefore the End Polio walking campaign to raise funds.   At the time of writing we have achieved a fine total $2541 and lying in 13th place BUT due to the great effort of our club members who donated through trybooking we will be able to increase that amount by $487 and jump to 10th. Well done everyone

Rotary Walk with Us to End Polio
Following a very successful event in 2020 Rotarians, friends and the community are encouraged once again to take action from October 1st to 31st to raise awareness, funds, and support to end poliomyelitis, a vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens the children of the world today.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary worldwide has helped to reduce polio cases from an average of 1000 cases per day in 1987 to a total of only 140 cases in 2020, a 99.9% reduction.

It is crucial to eliminate polio from Afghanistan and Pakistan, the last two countries where it remains endemic. We must also keep all other countries polio-free. If eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year.

Rotary and its partners are committed to eliminating poliomyelitis completely from the world. Smallpox is the only other disease ever completely eradicated. Funds are still needed to continue immunization and surveillance efforts.

The Rotary Walk With Us campaign throughout October is a fun way to raise awareness and funds to End Polio Now
Using Rotary’s friendly website (www.rotarywalkwithus.org), you can register to walk and set distance and fundraising goals. Alternatively, you can donate to someone who is walking. For the walkers the total distance you have set for the month is accumulated over the entire month of October. So, you can walk when, where and with whom you want in a COVID safe way. Each walk is logged on the website along with all donations. It’s easy.

All donations through Rotary will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation who are partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

All donations over $2.00 are tax deductable. Individuals, teams and Rotary clubs will be recognised and credited for their donations by The Australian Rotary Foundation Trust.

The results of the 2020 event exceeded all expectations. People registered from across Australia and the world. This resulted in raising over $122,000 for the End Polio campaign. The added benefit was the positive effect on physical and mental health by providing a focus for those living with COVID restrictions.

Register to walk and donate at www.rotarywalkwithus.org

This website has more information on the event and the global program to eradicate Polio.

Donate today and be a part of the countdown to history. With your help we can end Polio for good.
