As I sit at my desk typing, I keep being distracted by the brilliant sunshine outside, and all the spring tasks calling for me to do! Spring is well and truly here.
When it is fine it is easier to get out and be physically active-to do those things we know we should regularly do to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. It takes determination and grit to keep going when it is cold or rainy.
Paul Ceberano, our speaker on Monday, touched on the commitment needed by his Karate students in order to master the techniques, as well as the develop the mental attitude and calmness required. It was heartening to hear of the increase in self confidence students who were being bullied at school developed by learning Karate with Paul. He also told us of the amazing progress of Cathie’s niece, who at 14 will soon be being assessed for an adult Black Belt! Also stay tuned for Masters Karate classes to be run at CNC in the workshop building at the end of the carpark.
Next week will be very exciting as we will welcome back the PMM members and hear from ‘It’s the Little Things’ community founder, Jane Stewart. Next week is also our second Pantry Items Project collection day so be sure to bring your donations of the badly needed items with you.
Monday 27 October is an important day as at our meeting we will host District Governor, Peter Shepheard, and in his talk learn about him and his vision for his year as DG. It would be great to have a crowd so please bring partners (make sure you let Alan know of any visitors or absences).
Sustainability day at the Boroondara Farmer’s Market is coming on Saturday 15 November so let John McCaskill know if you can help at our R4Bs stand.

Thought of the day from last Monday's meeting with Paul Ceberano:
Bruce Lee said "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do".
Kyoshi Paul Ceberano operates the Ceberano Martial Arts Academy which runs karate classes for adults and children in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Ceberano Martial Arts Academy has three dojos – Canterbury, Eltham and Hawthorn.
Classes cater for children and adults.
Paul has over 40 years of teaching and training experience. Teaching Karate is his passion and life.
Paul is connected to a long lineage of marital arts. He is now 61 but looks very much younger.
He was born in Hawaii but is a Filipino. His family migrated to Australia and he was raised locally in Balwyn. His father started a karate school in Maling Place and the business has grown from that initial start. One of the business's locations is the Canturbury Neighbourhood Centre which he described as a great facility..
Paul loves karate and believe it can help with some of the scary things that confront children today. He acknowledged that great care needs to be taken in working with children but that his role can make a difference.
He does regret that at many schools there are no longer PE programs, but also considers that some children take on too many sports/activities at one time.
Paul spoke about his recent knee replacement surgery and his full-on approach to rehabilitation that already has him out on the golf course.
He is looking to introduce a masters (seniors) karate program and recommends that everyone needs to keep active.
Paul was a delightful presenter and looked resplendent in his karate karategi .

For the new sets of cleaning & laundry needs RIMERN has started a fundraiser.
$50 buys a full kit (mop & bucket, broom plus dustpan & brush, laundry basket, clothes hamper & kitchen tidy bin) and every donation over $2 is fully tax deductible.
Every RIMERN client needs a mop & bucket, broom & dustpan, swing top tidy & laundry basket plus clothes airing rack, but none of these are available second hand so RIMERN has to buy them.
A full kit costs $50 and RIMERN needs 10 a week. Can you sponsor one or more? It's Spring, time to help the RIMERN clients with their cleaning! Thank you in advance!
Spring is here and it is the time of year to think about getting outside with your family, friends and club members to participate in our Rotary Walk With Us fundraiser which starts on 1 October.
