A message from the Co-Presidents Week 25 August 2025

A note from the Co-Presidents

Many thanks go to Co-President, Jillian, for all her efforts organising the movie night in Rob’s absence.

It’s lucky that we were able to enjoy a lovely, relaxed evening watching the film, “Mr Burton” followed for many by dinner at the Glenferrie Hotel because it’s all hands to the plough from next week.

This is because as we aim to complete the paving around the Peace Poles and plant the pollinator garden at Victoria Park so it’s ready for the Peace Poles unveiling ceremony on Sunday 21 September!

Already the District Governor, Peter Shepheard, is coming as is the Mayor of Boroondara, Cr Sophie Torney, and our local Councillor, Shima Ibuki.  You are all invited to the 11am ceremony and the sausage sizzle to follow (using the BBQ which RC Kew donated a few years ago).

We need at least five people each day from Canterbury, and five from Kew for Monday September 8 & Tuesday 9 to lay the pavers, and the same number on Wednesday (and possibly a day on the weekend) to plant the plants. I’ll give more information at Monday’s meeting.

We are having some visitors from Rotary Nth Balwyn to our meeting so be your usual, friendly and welcoming selves.

Cheers
Elizabeth

Peace Pole Unveiling 21 September
The peace pole project has taken a giant step forward.

The peace poles have now been erected in Victoria Park Kew.

There is still some planting and paving work to be done (please see details in the message from the Co-Presidents above) but the official unveiling ceremony will be held on 21 September, which is World Peace Day, at 11 am. The Boroondara Mayor is coming along and there will be a sausage sizzle.

Needy Pantry Collection - Surrey Hill Neighbourhood Centre

Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre (SHNC) run a pantry to supplement the needs of a small group of local folks struggling to afford enough food. The pantry includes fresh fruit, vegetables and bread which are picked up from Coles’ waste room by volunteers. These are supplemented with donated pantry staples such as rice, pasta, tuna and cooking oils. Clients are mainly single mums and pensioners. Food sources are Coles and donations from the Centre’s members.

The purpose of this new project is for Rotary Club of Canterbury (RCC) to supplement the supply of foodstuffs. members are asked to donate items at nominated meetings and these will be transported onto the SHNC.

The first collection will be at the Club meeting on Monday 1 September.

The type of products that would be useful include:

UHT full cream milk
Jam/peanut butter
Biscuits sweet and savory
Honey
Tuna/salmon tinned
Rice
Pasta
Dried herbs and spices
Cooking oil
Dishwashing liquid
