Message from the Co-Presidents Week 1 September 2025

A note from the Co-Presidents

We have been busy since the last meeting! Our projects are all moving along, always reliant on members volunteering their time, brains and brawn! Unlike some people who wish to divide, people and organisations in Boroondara actively work together for good. Examples have been the donation, collection and delivery of fresh food to groups who can pass it on to those in need; member donations to the Food Pantry which Wayne delivered on Tuesday to Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and the Ceremony on Saturday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Kew Cenotaph where our Jess (Jess Wilson MP for Kew) spoke beautifully about the need to remember those who served protecting our country. See the photo below.

In another example of working together, thank you to those who have indicated their willingness to help prepare the ground and lay pavers (volunteers are needed from RC Canterbury and RC Kew as it is a joint project). We may have a Saturday working bee which will be for both Kew and Canterbury members for those who can’t help on weekdays, but we will need to get the pavers from the depot during working hours. Also put 11am 21 September in your calendars so you are at Victoria Park for the Peace Poles unveiling ceremony. The Mayor of Boroondara as well as the District Governor and past District Governor will be in attendance-and you don’t want to miss the sausage sizzle afterwards.

At Monday’s meeting we were happy welcome visitors, Greg Ross OAM, past DG and President of Rotary Nth Balwyn (picture below) and Gretta Williams also from Nth Balwyn Rotary. Greg is encouraging his members to visit another Club to find out more about what different Clubs do, and I agree with this, especially those new to Rotary. Also with us was Michael Li. He is keen to become involved - he also helped set up for Thursday’s FAM, the extra pair of hands made the work go faster!

Our speaker, new member Benji Brundin, was outstanding! He has packed a lot into his life so far and told his story so well, with great pictures too, that we were engrossed. See later for Anne’s report.

That’s all for now.
See you next week

Elizabeth

Last Week's Speaker Benji Brundin

On Monday evening members and guests were very fortunate to be entertained and astonished at the presentation by one of our newest members, Benji Brundin.

Benji started his presentation slowly and mentioned his five pillars of life. But then his talk took off and it was aided by a great Powerpoint presentation with many fantastic photos and videos.

In the photos above, on the right is Benji giving his presentation, the photo on the left is the real Benji. Adventurer, risk taker, author and as illustrated during his presentation a great bike rider.

Life took a turn for the worst for Benji in 2015 and during the period when visiting family in the Philippines, he became determined to chase an adventurous life.

He purchased a van, then a motorbike, and travelled across Australia. He worked in many townships including very rewarding times in Kakadu and Cape York. He became smarter at carrying essentials, survival skills and by visualising events to enable him to cope with emergencies.

After two years travelling Benji arrived back in Melbourne. He researched his next adventure a trip crossing all 10 of Australia's deserts - something no-one else had done.

We were enthralled by the detail, the imagery, and the demonstrated survival skills that Benji achieved in this epic journey. At the end of the trip his bike was broken, he had lost 12 kilos, had not showered for a long time but had set a world record.

Benji has published a book about his adventure, speaks regularly about how he has coped with mental challenges and looks ahead to future adventures.

Many thanks Benji for what was probably the most "out there' member behind the badge presentation the Club has ever seen - well done.

Next Week's Speaker - Corinne Fenton

Corinne Fenton is an award-winning Australian author who lives in Melbourne. Her forte is most definitely children’s picture books.

Her writing is heartwarming and honest, with a lean towards social history. That’s what makes her books such firm favourites with both children and the young at heart.  Corinne loves nature walks and animals, which are both themes that crop up in her writing. Most of her books are about animals, which speaks to her fondness for creatures great and small.

Corinne’s ‘Lionel and Me’ was named a Notable book in The Children’s Book Council of Australia CBCA Early Childhood category, Book of the Year Awards 2023. ‘Lionel and Me’ went on to become a Shortlisted Book and was later named the Winner, in the CBCA Book of the Year Shadow Judging awards, Early Childhood Category.

Corinne Fenton is actually a pen name. Prior to becoming an author, Corinne was known as Corinne King (do you see the link to a Club member). Under this name, she was the Assistant Regional Adviser of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators in Australia for Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania a role Corinne undertook for almost eight years.

As well as writing about animals, Corinne is pretty well known within her friendship circles for rescuing animals. If she sees an animal in need, she just can’t resist. Maybe that’s why most of her books include an animal hero or heroine.

Peace Pole Unveiling 21 September
The peace pole project has taken a giant step forward.

The peace poles have now been erected in Victoria Park Kew.

There is still some planting and paving work to be done (please see details in the message from the Co-Presidents above) but the official unveiling ceremony will be held on 21 September, which is World Peace Day, at 11 am. The Boroondara Mayor is coming along and there will be a sausage sizzle.

Fresh Food Collection
Co-Presidents Elizabeth and Jill were very busy on Saturday morning collection fresh vegetables from the Camberwell Fresh Food Market.

Thanks to Boroondara Council and Luke at the market for the chance to help people at CNC, SHNC and Servants and not waste food. Also thanks to Monique Ryan for helping us by contacting people at Servants and Jay for delivering goods to them.

Cenotaph Ceremony

Club member and local MP Jess Wilson was present on Saturday at a ceremony to celebrate the centenary of the Cenotaph in Kew.

Jess ran a competition for students to write about the meaning of it and the two winners read out their work.

It was a lovely service, attended by Co-President Elizabeth (and yes she had a very bury rotary weekend), who enjoyed the delicious  refreshments.
Pantry Delivery to SHNC
On Monday evening members contributed food items for the pantry at the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. Wayne Dong was our Uber delivering person of our Club's contribution to the pantry and on Tuesday morning this email arrived:

"Please give our huge thanks to all the lovely people at the Rotary Club of Canterbury who got together to donate a fantastic range of goods for our weekly community pantry. We love that it’s a great range of essentials plus some treat items for our pantry users
We’re a bit blown away by everyone’s generosity and want all the Club members to know that the items will be going to people who are struggling a bit and will be so grateful for their support
And thanks too to lovely (and photogenic!) Wayne for delivering everything and helping us to unload it all "
