President’s Report
On Tuesday evening the 91 members and friends of the Rotary clubs of Balwyn, Balwyn North, Camberwell and Canterbury listened to Associate Professor Dr Michael Woodward speak about the clinical trials around the management and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease – AD.
The disease is characterised by the build up or clumping of naturally occurring amyloids in the medial temporal part of the brain. These amyloids are also referred to as plaque. The build up can be due to genetic predisposition and it is predicted that 1 in 3 people will develop some degree of AD. The disease affects memory and thought processes.
The presence of plaque can be detected through an amyloid PET scan. Clinical trials of monoclonal antibody drugs have shown to improve levels of plaque in the brain. Monoclonal antibodies mimic the antibodies your body naturally produces as part of your immune system's response to foreign invaders or vaccines.
Unfortunately, our generation will likely not benefit from current trails, however our children and future generations will. In the meantime, keep your brain active by doing crosswords, number games and word games, learn a language, solve problems, eat a Mediterranean diet, exercise 5 times a week for 45 minutes and work up to a healthy puff and maintain an active social life to help stave off dementia.

VALE Lawrence Atley OAM.
Lawrence was District Governor for Rotary International District 9800 in 1989 – 90 and is survived by his wife Margaret. Lawrence was featured in Networker in June this year where he was recognized for fifty years of Rotary Service. Lawrence died on Wednesday night 21/09/22 with his wife Margaret by his side. The funeral details are: Wednesday 5th October 11:00am St Joseph’s Church 30 Fitzgerald St South Yarra
FORaMEAL update
A couple of good stories from the FORaMEAL camp
Philippines - In the last four weeks our shipment to the Philippines has helped victims of a massive earthquake in Abra, a huge fire in Masbate, and now typhoon Karding in San Miguel. See photos below.
Just as well that we have so many packing events in November and December; it looks as though we will be needing to send another shipment early next year.
Rotarians assisting said, “The victims wish to extend their thanks for the emergency foods packs, this is great help for them and as of now they starting to rebuild their homes.”
Ukraine - 
Today 100,000 meals were transported to Rotary’s Donations in Kind warehouse to be collected by the ADF this week and sent via Poland to the people of the Ukraine.
The shipment will also include 6 pallets of medical and surgical supples, …. And underpants, especially requested, were sourced from all over Melbourne.
Whatever the need, Rotary finds a way to meet it.
