Stories
Last Week's Meeting - 24 May 2021

At last Monday's meeting Edda gave a short presentation, with lots of photos, highlighting the great work by Club members and Parks Victoria staff at the tree planting and re-vegetation project at Yarra Bend Park in Studley Park last week.

Val asked for volunteers at two upcoming FORaMEAL packing events at Strathcona GGS on 24 June and MacRobertsons Girl High School on 15 July.

Jenni advised that the seedling project at the Ashwood School, which was in part funded by the Club, is progressing well.

And Ted advised that unfortunately due to Covid restrictions the installation of the water bore in Labay province in the Philippines is still not able to proceed.

Last Week's Speaker -  Tim Falkiner

Our speaker Tim Falkiner, who describes himself as an anti-gambling zealot,  gave us a very comprehensive overview, including early history, in regard to gambling.

Tim's presentation covered some of the following areas:
  • what is gambling
  • the history of gambling regulation
  • gambling products available in Victoria - there are lots
  • the qualities of these products - good and bad
  • pokies
  • gambling addiction

Tim identified that while there may be some short time gambling wins, the "odds" are definitely stacked in favor of the gambling provider not the gambler.

Thanks Tim for your informative presentation.

District 9800 Change-over
We know you are all well aware of the ongoing situation in Melbourne with the Covid restrictions on numbers attending functions and would appreciate that this has made planning for the District Changeover a little challenging.

We want this function to be a celebration of the very different year we have just had and a chance to look forward to the next Rotary year with as many people as possible in attendance.

Hence the District Changeover has been moved to Saturday 10 July.  Same details, same venue, same time.

Thank you to everyone who has already booked.  If you are unable to attend on this new date please contact Jane Pennington (jane.pennington@rotary9800.org)  to arrange a refund.

If you have not yet booked, please do so and come and celebrate with your Rotary colleagues.  It will be “first in best dressed” for tickets as we are unsure what the restrictions will allow by then.  The invitation is attached with booking details.

If you have questions please contact Jane.

We both look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful celebration.
