Message from The President Week Commencing 13 July 2026

Last Monday night we had an outing to the Camberwell Art Show with dinner afterwards at the Tower Hotel in Hawthorn. The art show displayed 1000 pieces of artwork with the overall quality of art being excellent. This art show is now in its 61st year and is a credit to the Camberwell Rotary Club. If you didn't go last night, it's certainly worthwhile visiting during the week. I know that I resisted the temptation to buy a piece of art, but one member of our club made an investment.

We're still in a busy phase of the year. Next week we will have a meeting at Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre with the speaker being David Dobney talking about St Jude's school in Tanzania.

The following week is back to socialising, at the exciting Trivia night run by John McCaskill. If you haven't booked already, please do so. The tables are for eight people, and non-Rotarians are definitely welcomed. Supper will be provided, along with a raffle, and drinks will be available at the bar at very reasonable prices! The proceeds of this event are to go to RIMERN.

We were going to do some dancing with Camberwell Rotary on 3rd August, but that has been cancelled because I think we need to get back to our normal rhythm of speakers and dining at the CNC The socialisation doesn't stop there, however, because hopefully in a months time there will be a film night. - like last year at the Lido Cinema in Hawthorn, followed by a meal at the Glenferrie Hotel. More information will be forthcoming. Once again, Rotary Kew Club members will be joining us for the evening.

Our big news is that Canterbury Rotary Club will be hosting a Rotary Exchange student from the Czech Republic. Alan Stevens and I will be hosting him for the first six months of the year and I'm hoping that we can get some more volunteers to help -either with hosting or entertainment, for example, taking him to the football. I have been assured that these Rotary exchange students are usually self-reliant and independent. He is meant to be arriving on Saturday 11th July but is having some visa issues.

On a more serious note - our members are being struck down with surgical problems, with Alan and Nora being hospitalised this and next week, and Elizabeth having had her surgery last week! She is recovering well and hopefully will be back to the CNC the following week. I know we all wish them well. And we know that they will be back as soon as possible because you can't keep good Canterbury Rotarians down!

Balwyn Rotary Club has two interesting events coming up. On 14th July at Green Acres Golf Club. they  will welcome a speaker to discuss NAIDOC Week, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. .On 28th July. Julie Mulhauser will be overseeing planting in Belmont Park Canterbury, (Beside Camberwell Grammar School.) The aim of this project is to increase the area of low growth shrubs. to try to encourage an increase in native birds. I took part in that first planting and it turned out to be quite a social event! Notices about these two events are in this bulletin.

I'm going to Hobart for a few days for a little R&R. I'll see you all next week.

Cheers

Jillian
