Last Week's Zoom Meeting - 31 May 2021

We were back into zoom mode for our Monday meeting and it worked well and everyone was very attentative!

Ted mentioned viewing and recommended watching videos that have been posted to the I Fix the Planet website which includes a number of rotary projects. If you are interested these can be access at https://www.ifixtheplanet.org/the-videos/

Val unfortunately advised the two planned FORaMEAL events in rural Victoria at Bendigo and Echuca have had to be postponed due to Covid restrictions but are hopefully going to proceed in August. Val is also looking for additional volunteers for a packing event at Strathcona Girls School on 24 June.

Cathie mentioned that Ted Waghorne has agreed to take on the role as Director International and Alan Stevens the role as Vocations Director for the 2021-22 year - many thanks.

Bob Lambert provided an update on the R100 Yarra Park playground project  which will have its official opening on 8 August.

Last Week's Speaker - Tony Nguyen

Our newest and youngest Club member Tony Nguyen gave us an insight into his life with a member behind the badge presentation last Monday.

President Tony Laycock teamed in well as the insightful journalist with some leading and probing questions to help us get to know Tony Nguyen.

Tony's parents come to Australia separately from Vietnam in the 1980's - his mum via Hong Kong and his dad via Malaysia. They met and married in Australia .

Tony is one of three children and his parent worked long hours to make ends meet when the children were growing up. This lead Tony to work in the financial planning industry to help ensure he and his family have a sound financial footing. He has now moved in the real estate industry and is enjoying the experience.

Tony's partner is Tran and they have been together for more than 10 years.

Tony's mum has always been involved in charitable activities and this has rubbed off on him.

Tony when asked to tell us about something that we might not know about him revealed that, since his last year in high school, he has used meditation to help him deal with staying focused and deal with the stresses of everyday life - he has found this to be a great assistance to him.

Tony offered some suggestions about how to help new members like himself get involved with the Club and more broadly rotary activities and projects.

Thanks Tony for your very relaxed and informative member behind the badge presentation which members should be aware Tony agreed to do at very short notice due to meeting changes because of the covid restrictions. Thanks Tony

Next Week's Speaker - Kay Dufty via Zoom

Kay Dufty has a background in community development, social work and health promotion which has brought her to work in a range of settings with various communities, individuals and health professionals in Victoria.

Prior to commencing at Hepatitis Victoria as a health promotion worker largely with youth and with Aboriginal communities, Kay most recently worked on a program funded by the Department of Justice, where she assisted prisoners to settle into the community upon their exit from prison.

Kay is passionate about social justice and values the opportunities through her work at Hepatitis Victoria to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and liver health and available services and supports, and to encourage healthy choices at an individual and societal level toward better health outcomes in communities.

Yarra Park Playground

IT'S OFFICIAL! YARRA BANK PLAYGROUND OPENING SET FOR AUGUST 8TH 2021

It's official! The official opening, that is. The R100 Playground Committee has agreed with the City of Boroondara that the official celebrations for the opening of the Rotary 100 Playground at Yarra Bank Reserve will be on Sunday 8 August 2021. The event will be a giant Family Fun Day, featuring children's entertainment, music, refreshment stalls, and the Rotary Club of North Balwyn is coming to the party too, to provide the sausage sizzle for the day.

The Rotary clubs of Glenferrie, Camberwell, Hawthorn, Canterbury and North Balwyn are partnering with the City of Boroondara for this special event. Families from all over Boroondara will be invited to come along and enjoy the day, and share with Rotarians, family and friends of Rotary this very special anniversary. So keep the date free. And keep eyes peeled for more news via the Bulletin and on Facebook!

District 9800 Change-over
We know you are all well aware of the ongoing situation in Melbourne with the Covid restrictions on numbers attending functions and would appreciate that this has made planning for the District Changeover a little challenging.

We want this function to be a celebration of the very different year we have just had and a chance to look forward to the next Rotary year with as many people as possible in attendance.

Hence the District Changeover has been moved to Saturday 10 July.  Same details, same venue, same time.

Thank you to everyone who has already booked.  If you are unable to attend on this new date please contact Jane Pennington (jane.pennington@rotary9800.org)  to arrange a refund.

If you have not yet booked, please do so and come and celebrate with your Rotary colleagues.  It will be “first in best dressed” for tickets as we are unsure what the restrictions will allow by then.  The invitation is attached with booking details.

If you have questions please contact Jane.

We both look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful celebration.
