Notes from the President.
We have had a very busy two weeks with FORaMEAL out at Yarra Valley Grammar. Two days of preparation and two days of packing which involved over 200 students., and we packed over 44,000 meals, which is a wonderful effort. This food will be going to the food bank in Melbourne, Ukraine and Ethiopia.
We had a most interesting meeting on Monday night with Enrique Ketterer Ortiz, who is a lecturer at Swinburne University educating us about AI. The main lesson was that we should not implicitly trust AI and that if the information provided does not concur with our knowledge of the topic, then we should investigate this, rather than just believe the AI version. He discussed the incursion of AI technology into education, explaining that all students will need to learn how to use AI to get the maximum benefit rather than just totally depending upon it.
There are a few functions coming up that we need to know about. Firstly, the film night on 17 August at the Lido Theatre in Hawthorn. The film is “Holy Days” and should be a light-hearted movie. Afterwards we will progress to the Glenferrie Hotel for a meal. We have hired a private theatre, and it is some important that we finalise numbers by 10 August., bookings can be made via Humantix, flyer is in the bulletin. There have been a few activities lately, but this one should be an evening of fellowship and fun.
Rotary Club of Kew is holding a trivia night on Saturday 29 August at Sackville Grange in Kew. There is a notification about this in our bulletin and bookings can be made through Trybooking. Kew members organised a table of participants for our trivia night and it would be nice to be able to reciprocate.
The other function is the cooking morning on Wednesday, 19 August at Denham Road Hawthorn. I need several more participants., so if you’re interested, please contact me.
It has been a very busy year with activities and also very interesting speakers organised by Michelle Critchley! And it will continue, with the student debate on 14 September, the footy night on 21 September and a trip to the flight simulator at Swinburne University on 28 September.
These will make for a very interesting next few months.
