President's Message Week 12 May 2025

A Note from the Prez

The week goes so quickly when you are busy! Monday’s meeting was well attended with soon to be inducted Benji Brundin and John Womersley  present. As well as bringing the raffle prize, Benji won it but donated the book prize to Kyle. Riz Achtar was our speaker and Jonathan Shepherd came to hear the latest information from Riz about electric cars. Our newest member, Craig Smith, who owns an electric car, did a great job chairing the meeting.

As well as working on settling our club into the new venue with the new caterer, I have been kept very busy meeting potential members, planning for our provision of pollinator and children’s activities at Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre for their Open Day this weekend (roster emailed today so helpers please check your time) and planning for Changeover. 30 June  will be here in a flash-please save the date.

Thank you very much to all those who are helping at Saturday’s Open Day (10am-1pm), including Lili-Ann who has been busy teaching children from Parkmore Primary School the Waggle Dance so they can perform it on the day. The CNC is worth a visit , especially for people with young grandchildren.

See you there

Elizabeth

Last Week's Speaker - Riz Ahktar

ALL YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT EVs

Riz Ahktar is passionate about cars, in general. He began his presentation with a photo of Nimboy International Speeding, in China, where he had the opportunity to explore the Zeekr, an electric car which is a brother and sister of Volvo. He described the extent to which China had zoomed ahead in technological developement.

There are currently over two hundred and seventy thousand electric vehicles on the road. EVs, in his view, are becoming cheaper than petrol cars. It costs between ten and twelve thousand dollars to replace the battery in an electric vehicle. However, the batteries outlast the cars. Companies now offer ten year warranties. Even the earlier battery technology ( from 2015) can last for ten years.

Riz claims that it costs five dollars to charge his electric vehicle. Whatsmore, one can set when and how long to charge an EV. One must think of charging an electric vehicle in the same way one recharges one's mobile phone. Due to the variety of electric vehicles now on sale, the price for an electric vehicle has declined. Thus, once the most popular EV, the Tesla Model Y sales have also declined. Yet, Tesla is still one of the most productive car factories of all of them. He argues that the Chinese have a more long-term view of electric vehicles, so car parts are now more readily available. In the future, and not so far away, China may be producing flying cars. Even drones are being used on a daily basis for deliveries.

Tesla checks to see if its vehicles can be hacked through the use of ethical hacking competitions. The winner gets a Tesla. The electrical vehicle can be charged overnight, when it is cheaper to recharge. In short, Riz gave us substantial details about electrical vehicles and positive arguments for considering purchasing one. It was an interesting perspective.

Next Week's Speaker - David Chivers

Our speaker next week is Club member David Chivers.

David has a long history working in the food industry and will us some insights about how it operates.

Spotted at RIMERN

Our "Mr Everywhere" Rob Simpson, on the left in the photo, was this time spotted doing a RIMERN pick-up run. Look at that truck filled to the brim with recycled household items which will eventually find their way in the accommodation of people who benefit from the great work of the RIMERN organisation.

Rotary Bike Rroup Week 12 May 2025
Max Holland manages the "Tour de Canterbury Rotary" and provided this update of the recent adventures of the rotary bike group.

This week, the ride started from the Watergardens station and went down Taylors Creek to Brimbank Park for coffee at the Lumbar & Co Cafe. The Park is on the Maribyrnong River, which we followed downstream to an excellent lunch at the Anglers Tavern by the River. We then rode to the nearby Ascot Vale station for the trip home.

The Dodd family farmed the land of Brimbank Park from 1860 until 1974, when the State Government purchased it for parkland. The Park’s riverbanks and rock formations are of particular geological interest. The Park has numerous trails, playgrounds, ovals, and picnic areas, and it preserves the original modest farm cottage. The playgrounds include some sculptures by the same artist featured in the ride last week at the Lehmann’s Farm Park in Epping. The following link has 55 photos of the Park.
