Club Meeting - 20 May 2019

On Monday evening President Steve announced that long time member and former President David Robinson had advised that he will not be continuing as a Club member next year. Members Helen Hartnett and Bill Granger spoke of David's significant contribution to Canterbury Rotary Club, his friendship and the great social events he has coordinated. David joined rotary in 1994, has been a Board member for 10 years and was President in 2007-08. He started many on-going activities and functions including the walking group, past president's dinners, a job interview process for migrants and, following the death of David's wife Mary,  the Mrs Robinson cancer group which has raised substantial funds.

David responded by advising he is resigning because of some health  concerns but will still be active as a friend of rotary. He thanked the Club and the members for its friendship  and support over many years.

Like last Monday evening the Club has been very fortunate this week to induct another member. This week Anthony Balocca was inducted as a new members. Anthony was sponsored by Tony Laycock and his mentor will be Gerry Cross. Congratulations Anthony on becoming a member of the Canterbury Rotary Club.

Ted announced that our Club meeting date was in fact World Bee Day. He also indicated the he and Rosemary are members of the World Bee Sustainability Group  and they will be speaking at the Rotary International Convention  in Hamburg about the Sustainability Group. Lili-Ann also provided great news that a venue at been secured for next year's Bee Festival and that the development of the event would now be stepped-up.

Last Week's Speaker - George Pesnikas

Val Cunniffe introduced our speaker George Pesnikas as her neighbour and also the plumber that has worked on the recent renovation at her home. George then provided a very interesting and entertaining presentation on the history  of plumbing practices and how plumbing is regulated today. He advised that he chose a career in plumbing because he liked hands-on work.

He referred to the general plumbing areas being water, gas, sanitary plumbing, drainage and roofing. Other branches of plumbing are heating and cooling, medical gas and fire protection. He spoke of the regulated plumbing process of apprenticeship, licencing and individual work certificates.

George provided advice and comment to many questions from the audience. He also elaborated on his engagement at the weekend to his fiancee Paris who was also able to join him at our Club meeting.
