32nd Canterbury Rotary Club Annual Meeting

Last week, as a prelude to the usual meeting, the Club's Annual Meeting was held. Club Secretary Neil Williams handled the formalities including calling a quorum, moving a motion that last year's Annual Meeting Minutes be accepted and similarly moving a motion that the 2018-19 audited financial statements be accepted.

Neil then announced the nominations for all the Board positions for the 2020-21 year and the nominations were duly elected by a show of hands of the members. Congratulations to the following on their election, and re-election in the case of a number of the Board members:

President                                         Tony Laycock
Past President                                 Lili-Ann Kriegler
President Elect                                Cathy Macmillan
Secretary                                          Neil Williams
Treasurer                                         John Braine
Director Community Services      Bill Granger
Director Club Services                   Anthony Balocca
Director Youth Services                Anne Josefsberg
Director International Services   Greg Vero

Congratulations especially to Cathie Macmillan on her election as President Elect. Cathie's election will continue a recent run of female Presidents in the Club following this year's President Lili-Ann Kriegler and the 2015-16 President Nora Ley.

Thank you to the current Board members Carmela Dimasi , Steve Wylie and Andrew Mastrowicz who will conclude their period on the Board in June 2020 and who in each case have been on the Board for a number of years.
Last Week's Meeting - 25 November 2019

Anne Brown President of the Yarra Bend RC, pictured above with acting President Rob Simpson,  distributed prize money to the winners of the Calcutta held on Oaks Eve at the Auburn Bowls Club. In a very much appreciated gesture Anne also passed  over a cheque to the Canterbury Rotary Club being the profits from the terrific social evening which the Yarra Bend hosted on the night.

As mentioned Rob  was acting President on Monday evening as Lili-Ann was away on a short holiday. A number of matters were raised;

  • Doug Hawley advised that he attended LaTrobe University to hear the presentations by the graduating students who were part of this year's Philippines Eye and Ear Mission to the Philippines. He was very impressed by the quality of the presentations and the glowing reports of their experiences of being part of the Mission to the Philippines.
  • Rob Simpson again called for volunteers to assist with the Maling Road Kriskrindl on Friday 6 December.
  • John Braine  asked members if available to assist with the loading and transport of DIK material. Please contact Lauire Fisher on 0428550574 if you can assist.
  • Please see the flier below for the Club Xmas part being held on Monday 16 December at President Lili-Ann's home in Balwyn.
  • Fabrienne Nichola from the Camberwell RC joined us and spoke about the film Homeland Story being shown at the Balwyn cinema on  Thursday 5 December. Please see the flier below.

Last Week's Speaker - Rob Cameron

This week we enjoyed a speaker with an ostensibly dry topic - the workings of the Commonwealth Appeal Tribunal - yet Rob Cameron, pictured above with Gilly Swinnerton,  gave us  a living, breathing insight through exquisitely vibrant word pictures of the work the Tribunal achieves.

Along our journey together, Rob explained the differences between VCAT, the CAAT and general court work (with which Rob is well familiar from his years as a barrister in Melbourne). VCAT mainly deals with the ability of private citizens to sue whereas the CAAT works in the area of appeals against government agencies.

Rob told an amazing story about an appeal against rejection of an NDIS provider to support taxis to the Casino for a very disabled but enchanting young man, mentioned all too briefly its work supporting small businesses in stouches against the ATO and revealed  a few details of their closed courts that apply to security matters.

Rob explained that the major controversies seen when visas are cancelled on grounds of poor character, and the dire implications for visa holders. Fortunately, he said, not all tribunal members  are lawyers; expert representatives from relevant areas of expertise are called upon when the matters need assistance, such as retired military commanders and members with specific expertise (although Rob Simpson had some comments and insight into the building representatives  calls to adjudicate).

The questions had to be closed well before we were satiated, and it Rob’s eloquence and insight delighted everyone present, some unexpectedly I was told as we departed.

Thank you Rob

Next Week's Speaker - Paula Vigorelli

Our speaker next week is Paula Vigorelli, Senior Research & Engagement Officer at Boroondara Council.
