Stories
Last Weeks Meeting
A good turnout for the meeting last Monday with a few joining us online - it seems the hybrid meeting is working. President Cathie managed to get more of herself into the picture - she's learning :)

A few updates on the night

  • Val spoke about the FORaMEAL packing event at the Hawthorn Town Hall which was attended by over 180 students in 2 shifts. These students represented 26 schools across the community and they packed a fantastic 38000 meals. Way to go team.  The packing event was also attended by Josh Frydenburg who took the time to meet with the students and thanks them for their efforts. Story is that this went down very well with them - they got a great sense of pride in doing good for others
  • Gilly gave Rob praise for his efforts in managing the beverage supplies as she had to do it during his 3 week absence in Singapore - job for life there Rob!!
  • Steve gave the unfortunate news that, after their previous thumping win, the Kew Bears came back down to earth with a loss in their last fixture. Wonder if this had something to do with their manager??
  • Doug initially asked for volunteers at the conference to run the packing event but we have subsequently been advised that this has been cancelled. It is felt that the numbers attending would not justify running it
  • Bob confirmed that the playground removal program is going strong with another one biting the dust - there are plans for significant playground removals over the coming months and so there will be an ongoing need for volunteers
  • Edda confirmed changeover night is booked for June 27th at the Amora Hotel again. Great venue and the last changeover was a fun night so make an effort to attend

No meeting on the next 2 Mondays with public holidays so if you have anything you want included in the bulletin be sure to send it through. After a great start to members corner in the last bulletin there is nothing to include this week.

D9800 conference next Friday through to Sunday looking forward to seeing members of the other clubs and hearing the good things that are going on in the district.

Advance notice that our next Speaker on May 2nd is Ken Mitchell whose topic is "40 years of domination of football"  Bio to follow closer to the date

Don't forget the Autoclassico on Sunday May 15th - Graham will be looking for volunteers on the day.
Last Weeks Speaker Terry McAleenan
PIZZA AND PAPER PLANES

Being a father is important. Engaging in your child's life is very important. Our speaker tonight, Terry McAleenan, from " The Fathering Project" showed us just how much.
Terry is a father of two daughters, now sixteen and fourteen. Many men work too hard and are not able to spend enough time to be with their children. Many children are growing up in fatherless homes. Thus, they miss out on positive male role models.

SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS

Terry gives presentations to schools to explain how to invite and engage men in schools. Most schools are predominantly organized and run by female teachers and staff members. What we have here is a deficit of male teachers.
"The Fathering Project" develops partnerships in local schools. He reminded us that school life needs to be aligned with home life. The major benefit of a father being present in the daily life of a child includes better academic, social and health outcomes for students. Schools should invite fathers to be part of school activities.

WHAT IS THE FATHERING PROJECT MOVEMENT?

Nearly eight hundred schools are involved in The Fathering Project nationally. Terry has a vision to extend it throughout the different states and into Catholic schools. Father engagement is one in which dads can be the best they can be.
Father engagement is one in which dads can be the best they can be. They do this by staying close and supporting their children in their education and learning.

WHAT THE FATHERING PROJECT HAS ACHIEVED

This project, in summary, is a low cost program which has experienced a great take-up during the lockdown. It has maintained a strong sense of strength and purpose for both the school and the family unit. A male support figure engages with his children . The outcome which can be observed is a confident and active child with a healthy outlook on life.

Stop Press! - RIMERN wine update

Preliminary tastings are in!
Our “unofficial” wine expert Rob Simpson reports the RIMERN VAN Rouge, and VAN Blanc are the real deal!

These hand selected wines are terrific value, excellent wines and delivered straight to your door.

It’s a great opportunity to help yourself to some great wines and at the same time assist the RIMERN project with their need to secure a delivery van for collecting reusable household goods.

So, everybody wins!
