Stories
Last Weeks Meeting
President Edda started the meeting with welcomes to our guests on the night, the guest speaker Michael Zervos from Courage to Care.
Also a welcome to our guest but soon to be member - Irena Bauer
Under the presidential matters the following
  • Auction on August 12th by the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst raising funds for the Rotary Foundation - more details on that below
  • The Pres will be away next Monday and the Monday after. PE Tony Nguyen will chair the meeting next Monday
  •  Val gave feedback on the Volunteering Workshop which focussed on volunteering rather than membership. Notably well over 200 attended this online presentation
  • Doug announced that there will be another food packing on August 7th in Box Hill - he has yet to finalise the venue but the event will include many year 10 and 11 students
  • Elizabeth advised that she has been in touch with Sacre Couer re the club assisting with their pollinator garden planting - more to follow on that
Last Weeks Speaker - Michael Zervos - Courage to Care
IT IS NEVER TOO HARD

Mike Zervos, CEO of B'nai Brith Courage to Care ( VIC) Inc, gave an inspiring address to The Rotary Club of Canterbury. This organization was established in 1843 and it provides a universal message.
Courage to Care reminds us , as individuals, that we need to think about our own behaviour. We also need to learn from history and about the story that every family can tell. The Question each one of us should ask is
"How do we know what triggers people?" Any speech which stops a person from being who she or he is, is inappropriate.

WHAT DOES COURAGE TO CARE DO?

The members of Courage to Care call themselves Upstanders. This differentiates them and the people they teach and mentor from those who are Bystanders

Courage to Care goes to schools, work places and other institutions, to create a generation of upstanders, who call out negative behaviour amongst people. In doing so, it deals with discrimination, racism and prejudice. Courage to care is currently celebrating its thirtieth anniversary.

Furthermore, schools do not have to travel to participate in programs. Incursion programs can also be organised.  By doing so, the seeds of the future are being planted.

As B'nai B'rith is essentially a Jewish culture organisation the anecdotes from Mike focussed on the Individuals who are bystanders must be recognised. These examples include 27,000 righteous people who helped save Jews from death in World War Two. And William Cooper, an indigenous man, from Footscray who took it upon himself to make a stand and took a protest to the German Embassy in Collins Street, Melbourne VIC.

CONCLUSION
A series of questions have been raised about upstanders:
1. Who took the chance?
2 Whose behaviour are we supporting?
3. Are we doing anything?

Regionalisation Project
On Monday August 29th Tony will run a short presentation on the Regionalisation Pilot Project - there are other sessions which those who cannot attend the Monday meeting are able to join in order to get more information on this important initiative

Dear Rotary Member,

You’re invited to attend an information session about the future of Rotary in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Six identical webinars are being held in July and August to brief Rotary members in Zone 8 who:

• are not able to attend a club briefing on Regionalisation
• are not able to attend District organised briefings on Regionalisation
• have additional questions or clarifications they are seeking

The host for the webinars will be Rotary International Director Jessie Harman. Presenters will be Co-Chairs PDG Ingrid Waugh and PDG Peter Frueh. Questions will be asked through the Q&A function and will be moderated by Rotary International South Pacific and Philippines Office staff. Duration will be one hour with approximately twenty minutes of introduction and presentation, with the remainder answering questions.

These webinars will be recorded and made available afterwards. Questions asked will be incorporated into the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and answers section of the website: creatingtomorrowrotary.org

PLEASE CLICK 'REGISTER NOW' BELOW TO CHOOSE A SESSION THAT SUITS YOU.

Sincerely,

Regionalisation Pilot Project Team
