THOUGHT FOR THE DAY " You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today." - Abraham Lincoln It was wonderful to have some visitors this week. Justine Paragreen and Rachele Stin , both past Philippines Medical Mission alumni ( Rachele three times) were there, as was Rotary Radio panelist extraordinaire ( according to Jonathan Shepherd ) and Rypen alumnus Fiona Anderson . Jonathan Shepherd also came to meet old friends and to hear about Rotaract. Thank to David Chivers for making sure that visitors were made welcome and had someone to talk to, as well as for selling the raffle tickets. The visitors came to hear Carina Calcagno and Viraj Patel speak about Rotaract, what they do and how to start a Rotaract Club. It was an invigorating meeting chaired by Val Cunliffe and we all learned something about the Giant Monopoly Game! Val's thought for the day reminded us that we can't avoid our responsibilities, so we should get on with it now. But we need to be adaptive and change in order to survive. Carina and Viraj showed us many different ways, especially embracing social media in a strategic way, to help our club survive in the future. Their engaging presentation engendered many questions from the audience. Have a great week in Rotary! Calling all garden designers! I and Pam Norton from RC Kew met on Thursday with the Manager of Sustainability &Community at the City of Boroondara about our joint proposal to build a Peace Poles and Pollinator garden at Victoria Park, Kew, near the Playground there. He was pleasantly surprised and we walked around discussing various area we thought could be suitable while explaining the purpose of peace poles and their role in developing belonging and building community, as well as the peace building aspect - the pollinator part he was already on board with. He was quite positive about the project and suggested an area which already has a seat under a gum tree and thought we might have an area of about 20 square metres. Not a done deal yet though and we need to draft a possible layout and suggested plantings to submit. If you have designed a garden, especially a pollinator friendly one, we’d love help in planning the peace and pollinator garden. If you can help please contact me, at elizabethshepherd23@hotmail.com asap. Elizabeth
