Last Week Meeting Monday February 17 2025
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

" You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today." - Abraham Lincoln

It was wonderful to have some visitors this week. Justine Paragreen and Rachele Stin , both past Philippines Medical Mission alumni ( Rachele three times) were there, as was Rotary Radio panelist extraordinaire ( according to Jonathan Shepherd ) and Rypen alumnus Fiona Anderson . Jonathan Shepherd also came to meet old friends and to hear about Rotaract.

Thank to David Chivers for making sure that visitors were made welcome and had someone to talk to, as well as for selling the raffle tickets. The visitors came to hear Carina Calcagno and Viraj Patel speak about Rotaract, what they do and how to start a Rotaract Club.
It was an invigorating meeting chaired by Val Cunliffe and we all learned something about the Giant Monopoly Game!

Val's thought for the day reminded us that we can't avoid our responsibilities, so we should get on with it now. But we need to be adaptive and change in order to survive.
Carina and Viraj showed us many different ways, especially embracing social media in a strategic way, to help our club survive in the future. Their engaging presentation  engendered many questions from the audience.

Have a great week in Rotary!

Calling all garden designers!

I and Pam Norton from RC Kew met on Thursday with the Manager of Sustainability &Community at the City of Boroondara about our joint proposal to build a Peace Poles and Pollinator garden at Victoria Park, Kew, near the Playground there.

He was pleasantly surprised and we walked around discussing various area we thought could be suitable while explaining the purpose of peace poles and their role in developing belonging and building community, as well as the peace building aspect - the pollinator part he was already on board with. He was quite positive about the project and suggested an area which already has a seat under a gum tree and thought we might have an area of about 20 square metres.

Not a done deal yet though and we need to draft a possible layout and suggested plantings to submit. If you have designed a garden, especially a pollinator friendly one, we’d love help in planning the peace and pollinator garden. If you can help please contact me, at elizabethshepherd23@hotmail.com asap.

Last Week's Presenters: Carina Calcagno and Viraj Patel 17 February  2025

Carina Calcagno is the Secretary of Whitehorse Rotaract and Viraj Patel represents Rotaract University of Melbourne and they were our presenters on Monday 17 February.

The evening covered a wide range of topics and themes about establishing and maintaining a Rotaract Club. Val introduced the speakers to us by way of the notion that Rotary Clubs such as ours should develop a continued  relationship with Whitehorse Rotaract.

Members of a Rotaract Club are not only university students, nor are they only working persons. The most basic of ideas exposed was that not everyone is meant to be a leader. However, they can volunteer and participate in projects. There are two types of Rotaract Clubs - the traditional and the Satellite Club.

Carina and Viraj provided us with guiding steps to establish a Rotaract Club:-

1. Youth Champions
2. Forming a Team
3. Get your hands dirty
4. Paperwork and Training

Individuals can work towards being in executive positions and they can " get their hands dirty" through involvement in activities. Viraj emphasized the need to get the paperwork right ( naming the Club and setting strong foundations).

Marketing and membership go hand in hand . The initial steps involved  are to fulfill executive roles and then to retain membership to keep the club afloat. Rotaract members can be social and volunteer in various opportunities . The needs of the members should be forefront in the minds of Rotaract Club executive members.

Viraj outlined Rotaract University of Melbourne and its essence. It is a top down structure with ninety members. The members have less of a voice. Membership fees are five dollars and grants from both the University of Melbourne and Rotary are used. Members join on the basis of career prospect boost and join sub-committees. There are many leadership opportunities.

Carina's Whitehorse Rotaract Club is a member-led style model. It is community-based with many local obligations to be met It has five partner Rotary Clubs and accesses a cut for its presence at the Whitehorse Farmers Market. There is a minimal cost for membership  and Rotary District Leadership programs are applied for the purpose of the development of leadership skills . Rotaract Clubs can also access Foundation Grants. Paperwork can be classified as both the constitution as well as certificates to recognize efforts.

Many thanks to Carina and Viraj for providing a great insight into the operation of a Rotaract Club.

Rotary Bike Riders February 2025

This week the bike riders caught the train to Werribee and then rode through Point Cook to join the Bay Trail to Altona.

One highlight was the coffee at the Cafè beside the Alamanda Wetlands Park.

The photo shows Gerry Cross and Neil Williams with eagle sculptures. These impressive bird sculptures are by Folko Kooper and are a feature of housing developments by Villawood Properties. https://koopertasmania.com.au/work/public-art/  The ride finished with lunch at the Altona RSL which is near to the train station for the trip home.
