Our members and visitors came festooned with footy regalia, covering most of the teams in the AFL, for a night of football reminiscences and discussions on the current state of the game. It was a very high-spirited meeting, made more lively by our visitors, David Crow, Geoff Lamb, Colin Wisbey, Leigh Thompson and our speaker for the night, Graham (Smokey) Dawson as well as Michael Li and Steve Clarke’s partner, Robyn McNair. Make sure you read about Graham’s talk later in the Buzz.
Thanks to Pam Thomas, our caterer, we were also spoilt with a delicious meal of chicken cacciatore and garlic bread. Yum!
As usual. Lots is happening in our club this week

Make every effort to attend next week’s meeting to hear from Alex Birnie, one of our new members, who will give us a peek into the journey that has lead her to us at Canterbury Rotary.
Graham " Smokey" Dawson, a legendary sports commentator, and childhood friend of John McCaskill, came, for the second time, to speak to the Rotary Club of Canterbury. All Graham ever wanted to be was a sports commentator, ever since the age of three.
Eventually, he became a cadet in the sports department in the ABC. He trained as an accountant, and served two years in the Australian Army. He has quite a history in terms of this curriculum vitae, having gone to four Olympic Games and commentated on over one thousand eight hundred football games.
When asked questions from members of our Rotary Club, he gave some very pertinent remarks. Football in the seventies and eighties was a better spectacle. There were more high marks in the game itself. Balling up during the game occurs far too frequently. Professional footballers who only play football fail to meet the David Parkin standard for football players - they either work or study. The format for football is boring and uninteresting.
With a flair for presentation and story telling, our mate "Smokey" gave us an entertaining presentation about the icon sport of Australia.
At last Monday's meeting Steve Wylie provided an update on Canterbury’s engagement with the Team Sports 4 All (TS4A) project.
TS4Ahelps kids from disadvantaged families join local sports clubs by covering fees, uniforms, and gear, while offering ongoing support. The program changes lives by boosting confidence, health, school results, and social inclusion.
Canterbury Rotary is seeking volunteers to either make monthly check-in calls with families or help build links with local clubs. Training and support are provided—please contact Ant Balocca or Steve Wylie if you’re interested.
The Canterbury Rotary Club lunch usually meets bi-weekly at 12.30 for a meal and some fun.
David Zrna looks after the reservations for the lunch group. Please contact David at david.zrna@canterburyrotary.org or on 0467033092 to advise that you will be coming to a lunch.
