Message from the President Week Commencing 17 August 2026

Notes from the President

On Monday night we heard from one of our newer members, Grant King, as he presented a very professional PowerPoint display about his life as an accountant in the oil and motor industries, as well as providing some pictures of his lovely family.

We then had the pleasure of inducting Gary Pearce as a member of our club. Gary is proof that a letterbox drop can be effective. Since joining the club, he has worked with Rob Simpson, his mentor, at Rimern and is keen to become more involved with club activities.

Next week we have a film night at the Lido cinema in Hawthorn, to be followed by a meal at the Glenferrie Hotel.  Following that we have a range of activities including our cooking session on 17 August, the debate night on 14 September, the Kew Rotary trivia night on 29 August, and the Auto Classico event on Maling Road on 30 August. We don’t seem to have any lack of helpers for that event. There is a lot more to follow but this will be discussed  at a later date.

On 24 August, we will have a vote about redistricting of the Rotary Zone 8 districts. I have asked John Braine to forward all members the relevant email so that they could be educated about the changes. It is compulsory that we make a decision which needs to be forwarded back to the authorities by 31 August. Please read the email so that a reliable vote can be taken.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Lido on Monday night.

Cheers,
Jillian

Last Week's Speaker - Member Behind the Badge - Grant King
GRANT KING: MEMBER BEHIND THE BADGE

Grant King has been a member of The Rotary Club of Canterbury for almost 9 months. He began life as an accountant and believes in processing things in a logical way. The question he really loves is "...does it make sense?" Grant is loyal to his Trinity Grammar school friends, with whom he has a lifelong connection. He came into the world in North Balwyn and acknowledged the diverse range of graduates from his school. He chose to study in RMIT for an accountancy degree. Then, he proceeded to a post-graduate degree at Swinburne University. He obtained an internship in Deloitte Haskens, and adjusted to the world of marketing. Then, he became a Retail Area Manager with Caltex. After that, he worked for BP Oil for 7.5 years. He also sang at Holy Trinity Church Kew in the choir. Grant loves cars and has been involved in car restoration. He drove wedding cars.  He particularly enjoys the heritage of those cars.

Finally, and most importantly, he feels blessed to spend time with his grandchildren. He also loves being Santa, at Christmas Time at Victoria Gardens, The Glen, Northland and in Dandenong.

Definitely a man for many seasons, Grant has thrown himself into all the different roles required of The Rotary Club of Canterbury. It was an amazing presentation of a member behind the badge.
