Last Week's Meeting 1 February 2021

We had a lively meeting with several guests last Monday.

Assistant District Governor Casey Tan, pictured above, passed on the appreciation of District 9800 for the Club's contribution to the Rotary Australia Day event. Certificates were awarded to the Club, Tony Laycock and Lili-Ann Kriegler for the huge contribution they made to the event. Well done.

Other items raised included:
  • Ross Merolli asked members to advise him if they are able to nominate  organisations who could be provided with "crocs" that have been made available through DIK
  • Val is seeking volunteers to assist with an upcoming FORaMEAL repacking night on Tuesday, 16 February, 2021 at 6 pm at Doug's factory in Dandenong.

Ted Waghorne gave us an update regarding Labay School in the Philippines. The Club has committed funds for a water project but this has been delayed due to Covid travel restrictions in the Philippines.

The school is very poor and has no internet access which makes remote learning impossible. Canterbury Rotary Club assisted with funds for a photocopier and recently received  a very warm thank you from the school and some photos of the school activities including school vegetable gardens and of course the photocopier. Thanks Ted for facilitating this project.

Last Week's Speaker - Selba Luka

Val Cunniffe introduced our speaker Selba Luka with great enthusiasm because of the very many activities, and achievements that Selba has and is part of including very recently being awarded Dandenong's  Citizen of the Year.

Selba is the head of Afr Aus Care, a not for profit organisation. She indicated that she arrived in Australia in 1998 and along the way has worked at many occupations, has studied, established and grown Afr Aus Care and is a member and in some cases Chair of many community organisations and government and local government bodies - a very busy lady.

Afr Aus Care, using the Ubunti Framework of Support, aims to help build people up to where they belong through health and well-being support.

The organisation is helping to create today's young leaders - like those involved with the Black Rhino Basketball organisation which was formed to assist youth who had  had issues in the community.

Selba showed a couple of fantastic videos which highlighted the work of Afr Aus Care through its five locations and indicated that it now has an international presence.

Selba demonstrated what can be achieved by community organisations and of course great people. It was a pleasure to have Selba speak to us and be supported by Vivian Tong from the organisation.

Next Week's Speaker - Rodney Richards

Our speaker next week is Rodney Richards who will speak about the work of Angel Flight.

Rodney has been a private pilot for more than thirty years, lives in East Kew, and he and his wife  have three happily married daughters and five grand-children. In his business life he was involved in the marketing industry, was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Warrandyte and a Paul Harris Fellow.
