THOUGHTS FOR THE NIGHT

In keeping with the theme of the evening's presentation the thought for the night was:

"The economy is the start and the end of everything. You can't have a successful education reform or any other reform if you don't have a strong economy." David Cameron

And a second thought which is a bit different:

"Prison inmates are treated to cable TV, hot meals and a college education while on  the outside, many people can only afford these things through a life of crime." Alfred E. Neumann

 Notes from the Prez

Well, it was a smaller than usual gathering for our Rotary meeting this week with a couple of members unwell and several others away on holidays. Those assembled were still pretty involved and chatty which made for an enjoyable evening.

Our speaker, Matthew Sonnemann kept the attention of the audience, as we all wanted to hear his wisdom and views for where our economy is heading. We welcomed Pat Little to the meeting, accompanying member Helen Hartnett. John McCaskill was an urbane and welcoming Chairperson for the meeting.

Since John was away, George was in charge at the desk and ensured all attendees were ticked off, noting who was having a meal and who wasn’t. Everyone present will have to pay for this week when they next attend a meeting at the Canterbury Centre, and this won’t be until March 17 as we are visiting RIMERN next week and then there is no meeting due to the Moomba holiday.

I look forward to seeing many of you at 6pm at RIMERN next week as we tour the facility then enjoy a meal at the Darebin RSL. See the flier below for the address information.

Matters in the Interests of Rotary

Canterbury Rotary has been accepted into the annual Boroondara Volunteers Expo on March 19th from 1-5pm. Please let me know on 0419121059 if you can help out that day for a couple of hours as we really need to encourage some more people to help us carry out our projects.

The next FAM is on April 2nd at Caulfield Grammar.

Last  Week Presenter Matthew Sonnemann

THE ECONOMY AFFECTS US ALL

On Monday night Matthew Sonnemann, a stock broker  and wealth manager for over thirty years, spoke with us about the state of the economy in the recent last financial year and in the current financial year.

He displayed graphs and reports which highlighted the status of currencies, which had been debased by inflation, as well as the fact that the trend for the GDP in Australia is in a gradual state of decline. Matthew also mentioned a fact often referred to by business commentators in the media, that the influx of one million immigrants is making the Australian economy look much better than it actually is.

Until four or five years ago, the Australian economy was looking relatively good. He listed the fundamental issues affecting any discussion/analysis of the trends in the Australian economy:
  1. A lack of productivity growth
  2. Low business investment levels
  3. A surge in employment
  4. Energy cost rises
  5. Low productivity levels in the services sector
  6. The consumer saving rate is low - in contrast to what it was during COVID
  7. The average consumer is still spending
  8. Loose fiscal policies - including tax cuts and high budget deficits
  9. Industrial relation changes - making the economy rigid
Thank you Matthew for a very informative presentation.

Rotary Bike Group Week 24 February 2025

Max Holland provided this update of the adventures of the rotary bike group.

This week 26 February, the bike riders caught the train to Merinda Park and rode south on the path under the power lines to the western entrance of the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. We had coffee at the cafe in the service centre.

The website of the Botanic Gardens is https://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/cranbourne-gardens/  We didn’t go into the Garden’s Living Collections of Plants but rode on the Bush Land bike path. The photo is taken at the Elisabeth Murdoch Pavilion in the southern grassland area.

The ride then continued northward along the dedicated separate path of the newly constructed Narre Warren Cranbourne Road. We had a brief look at the Hilltop Park Reserve before finishing with lunch at the Settlement Hotel and catching the train home from Cranbourne station.
