Last weeks meeting
Thanks to chair for the night Tony L for the thought for the day

This one by Orville Wright

Quote of the day from Orville Wright. National Aviation Day ...

Pres Tony reminded that the Camberwell Art Show starts this week. Need something for a blank wall? Get down there and see the talent on show

Anne asked that we consider attending a presentation at her synagogue on July 26th - John Spooner the cartoonist will be talking on that evening. Let Anne know if you are interested and she will provide more details.

Elizabeth advised that the majority of the incoming board met last Friday focussing on planning for the upcoming year. Plenty to discuss and consider for the 12 months ahead.

She also commented on the recent Polio Plus Society meeting last Saturday. This is currently a small group of Rotarians across D9800 (just reached 100 members at the weekend) and the aim is to increase the numbers in order to help achieve the goal of US$50 million donations per annum across the Rotary world. This amount is matched 2 for 1 by the Gates Foundation meaning $150Mn is available for Polio eradication globally. It is a relatively inexpensive subscription at US$100 per annum. Fundraising at end Polio walks in October etc. count towards this goal. In attendance from our club were Elizabeth, Ant and Tony L.
Prior to this we had a presentation by Murray Verso who spoke on the creation of the Society but also gave some interesting statistics on the current state of play in terms of polio cases around the world. Sad to say that we are seeing an increase in numbers particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan as helpers are attacked, families refuse and other reasons.

Nora reminded us of the packing event which happened last week at Kevin's new location in Glen Waverley - a small number of volunteers from RCC attended and with students participating they managed to pack some 22,000 meals. She also put out a call for assistance with a packing event which happened on Tuesday this week at Caulfield Grammar - more details to follow on that event

Doug followed Nora and advised that we are sending 200,000 meals to the Philippines and 100,000 meals to Ethiopia. What does this man? Well essentially the stocks of meals are practically exhausted so it's time for more packing events to bolster them.

Finally, a word from John B. Please advise him if you are not wishing to continue your membership as we approach year end and have to provide numbers to District and RI. Obviously, it is hoped that we all continue to do the great work that this club (and Rotary) does. If you have any concerns, please feel free to reach out to Elizabeth or any board member.

On a lighter note. From publications in the bulletin you will be aware of how the renovations of the chateau in France are going for Val and Patrick. Well, they have also had visitors from our club over the last few weeks - chipping in to help the efforts as they return it to its former glory!

Here's a snap sent by Alan

Just when you thought that was the last word....   Have you booked for changeover?  Details in the bulletin and I have added the humanitix link there as well which you can copy and paste into your browser. It'll be a great night with entertainment planned as well. Get in and join as we celebrate the year of Tony and welcome Elizabeth for her year. Let's make it a bright occassion wearing one of the many colours of Rotary.
Last weeks Speaker - Member behind the badge - President Tony
A hard hitting interrogation of President Tony - all it needed was the spotlight!!  Well, not really - Tony L interviewed Pres Tony and it turned out to be an inciteful fun event

Thanks To Anne for the report (slightly amended to incorporate the questions)

A CONVERSATION WITH TONY NGUYEN

Q. Tony – Let’s start off with a little about your family history. Tell us a little about your family history, when did they arrive in Australia? Did they come to Melbourne first off or move here later? Where did you go to school?

FAMILY
Tony's mother spent four years in a camp in Hong Kong, before she came to Melbourne. His father travelled by boat from Vietnam to Malaysia to reach Bedong, before he eventually arrived in Melbourne in 1981. Tony, born in 1993, went to school in Springvale, spending the last three years of school in a Catholic school.

Q. What occupations have you had since you left school?

CAREER
Tony began his career as "chip master" in the Carribean Gardens and from there, he worked night shift in a pizza shop. He has also worked in a call centre, a bank in the home loan department. What struck him most was the ease in which he was allowed to offer credit to those who were already deeply in debt. As a result of this, he chose to become a financial planner, which he undertook for a period of three years. In his final incarnation, we now know him as a real estate agent.

Q. And how about Tran? Where did you meet and how long did it take before you both decided this was for the long term?

HIS LIFE WITH TRAN
Tony has known Tran since they were both sixteen years of age. Tran's family is very loving, what Tony describes as "a beacon of light". Their journey to marriage has been a long one, at least twelve years in the making. Mealtimes with his in-laws are very traditional and an integral part of their daily life together as a family group. His quote on marriage from his father - " Don't ever give up or walk away."

Q. We know that you gained an interest in joining Rotary through a chance meeting with Ted at Camberwell market, what is it that drove your passion to actually join and indeed join Canterbury (especially given the distance you have to travel to get here)?

TONY'S LIFE IN ROTARY
Tony has acknowledged a long held desire to give back and undertake charitable activities, as inspired by his mother who would send food back to Vietnam regularly. He wants to be surrounded by better things and better people, than he has previously been. For him, the work that Rotary International undertakes, has meant that he has done something else to change the trajectory of his life. This has been particularly important for him.

Q. You’ve been in Rotary for 3 years and are just about to complete your Presidential year
What are the highlights for you?
Now that you are finishing your presidential year what avenue of service/role would you like to be involved in – notwithstanding that as IPP you still have a key role on the board

The highlights for him were the mentoring, the opportunity to grow as a person. He believes that he would like to be involved as IPP in something to do with communication both internally and externally

Q. Lastly, tell us something about yourself that we would never guess?

SOMETHING YOU WOULD NEVER GUESS...
Tony loves cooking and food, in general. He learned to make souvlaki and pizza at an early age. His favourite recipe is Vietnamese beef noodle soup.

Next weeks speaker - Rob Anderson - Food waste and recycling

Rob Anderson is a chemical engineer who has been a member of the Rotary Club of Canterbury since 2019. Over COVID he volunteered heavily for ESRAG (Rotary’s Environmental Sustainability Action Group). In early 2024 with Rotarians from Sydney and San Diego, he co-founded Climateers, a for-profit venture to support food waste reduction and other climate solutions.

Almost a third of all food made is wasted. If food waste was a country it would be ranked third behind China and USA as a greenhouse gas emitter. In 2021 Sustainability Victorian identified food waste as a $6 billion opportunity in Victoria.

On September 11th Climateers will run the Victorian Food Waste Action Summit and in early October the Boroondara Food Action Summit at Hawthorn Town Hall to bring together stakeholders to collaborate and tackle the problems of food waste and food insecurity.

In July Climateers will onboard ten interns from Universities including Deakin, Swinburne and Monash to participate in a program culminating in the Action Summits.

As respected community leaders Rotary is uniquely positioned to support these students and help bring together local government, food rescue nonprofits, schools, food businesses and citizens to collaborate so that together we reduce food waste and the number of people going hungry in our local community.

Rob’s presentation will explain the program and opportunity in more detail as to how the club can benefit by getting involved and how it can build on the work done by ForAMeal to provide more food relief to those in need.
